Meerlust Red, Stellenbosch, 2020

Meerlust were the pioneers of Bordeaux varietals in the Cape, and were the first to produce their iconic, award-winning wine, ‘Rubicon’ in 1980. Meerlust Estate has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756 and today, the dedication to quality winemaking continues under the guidance of eighth generation, Hannes Myburgh. In spring 2020, winemaker Wim Truter joined Meerlust, taking over from Chris Williams to become only the third winemaker to take the reins at this historic estate. The 2020 Red is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, every parcel of each variety was fermented separately before spending eight months in oak for added complexity. This red has ripe flavours of red berries, plum, and subtle spice; complemented by hints of oak and a touch of earthiness. This versatile wine pairs beautifully with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or rich pasta dishes. It’s also excellent with hard cheeses like aged cheddar or gouda.
