Domäne Wachau Smaragd Grüner Veltliner 2019/21, Achleiten

The picturesque Wachau is a stretch of the Danube Valley in Austria, famed for its steep hillside vineyards and renowned UNESCO status. It’s a mosaic of soil types and, as a result, some of the world’s finest Grüner Veltliner. And fewer places do it better than Achleiten, a legendary vineyard in the Wachau village of Weissenkirchen. It is famous for wines with inimitable mineral character – and this Grüner Veltliner is no exception. Grown on steep terraces meticulously worked by hand, grapes are handpicked and carefully vinified to bring out fresh, elegant cool-climate flavours. This is a sophisticated wine that’s drinking perfectly now, but has the ability to age for another 15 years or more. It’s no surprise that the 2019 vintage was awarded 98 points from Wine Enthusiast. Expect aromatic floral notes and zingy citrus and white pepper flavours with a trademark mineral edge that will complement rich fish dishes or poultry.
