Raphaël Midoir ‘L’Élixir de Léo’ Malbec 2022, Touraine
£14.99
Malbec is most often associated with Argentina, but the grape originates in France – and this example from the Loire Valley is a real star. It’s produced by fifth-generation winemaker Raphaël Midoir from his 30-hectare family estate in Chémery. Grapes are harvested from 40-year-old vines and vinified in stainless steel to preserve the fresh fruit character. There’s so much going on here: fruity and lively aromas including violet, currant and blackberry jam. It’s wonderfully juicy – and lighter than many Argentinian Malbecs so pair its fresh flavours with everything from rich and robust game and mature cheeses, to light salads and vegetarian dishes.
